Renowned video-game journalist Geoff Keighley has come up with a new approach to gaming events and conferences. Due to COVID-19, most gaming conferences like E3 and Gamescon have been cancelled. This is where his concept of Summer Games Fest comes into play.
It’s intended to be a four-month long online virtual experience of everything gaming, including digital product showcases, game trailers and launches, free digital demos and in-game events. More of a calendar of the aforementioned events rather than a singular event, Keighley doesn’t intend to compete with media outlets like GameSpot and IGN, who are also planning to conduct their own substituent events for E3 in June.
The event involves partnerships with major companies like Activision, Blizzard, Bungie, EA, Microsoft, Sony, Steam and many more. Nintendo is absent as of now, but he hopes that they will as it is an open event. Running from May through August, expect the majority of content and events to start appearing at the start of June. It won’t be a uniform schedule, with some weeks more packed than others.
More than anything else, Summer Games Fest has shown the world that major gaming events don’t need to be confined to 5000-ish people in a room with a presenter on stage. It doesn’t need to be something that only people who can afford expensive plane tickets and hotels can experince. The future of gaming events is coming, and it’s the more inclusive and accessible than ever before.
