It’s no secret that the Galaxy Fold launch was a disaster. With all the confusion surrounding the protective layer on the folding display, and the displays breaking too, it gave people all the wrong impressions about foldable devices in general. The Z Flip was well received though, and Samsung has somewhat turned around the general public’s opinions on this new tech with excellent durability. And with the Z Fold2, they seem to be on the right track as well.
Let’s get this out of the way first — I’m not a fan of the name. Galaxy Fold was simple, Z Flip was fine as well but this mashup of letters and adjectives and numbers just doesn’t look or sound great. Rant over.
Internally, the Z Fold 2 comes with the new Snapdragon 865+ globally (thankfully no Exynos), 12GB RAM, and 512GB of non-expandable storage. The displays get a much-needed size bump. The cover display now fills the whole front of the device with a punch-hole design, at 6.23″ at 1080p 60Hz. The internal folding display is now 7.7″ at 1440p-ish, at a buttery smooth 120Hz. The weird side notch is gone, replaced with a fully borderless experience with a hole-punch cutout located in the center of the second half, for some odd reason. The rear is flaunted by a triple-camera setup, with a 64MP Main, 12MP 2X telephoto, and a 16MP Ultrawide. There is no 8K video recording support, though.
Overall, the Z Fold 2 is everything the original was trying to be. With a much more durable internal plastic display, and better hinge mechanism, the durability problems of the original should have faded away. And with the much more usable cover display and larger displays overall, the Z Fold 2 is the new benchmark for foldable tablet devices.
This is the area where Samsung shines best. Foldable devices are the future of the company. We know for a few years now that S/Note sales have been dropping, and honestly the phones aren’t that unique anymore as the android landscape has caught up. The Z Fold / Flip line will be the desperate push Samsung needs to stay as a top competitor in the smartphone world.
