iPhone 12 – The iPhone for most people

Apple has announced its successor to the best selling iPhone 11: the 6.1-inch iPhone 12. The phone looks similar to the previous iPhone with 2 significant changes: an OLED Display and 5G.

Along with the 12 and 12 Pro models, there’s also a 4th new iPhone, the iPhone 12 Mini. You can read more about the other products released today here:

Design

From the back, the phone resembles the iPhone 11 with the same camera module and glossy back. However, Apple has decided to change it up by giving the phone flat aluminum sides for an overall look that more closely matches the iPad Pro and iPad Air along with new colors: black, white, blue, red, and green. The glass is coated with what Apple calls a ceramic shield for improved durability along with improvements to water resistance. Yes, the notch is still here but the front has gotten slightly thinner bezels thanks to the new display.

New Display

The iPhone 12 has transitioned from LCD to Super Retina XDR. The OLED screen has a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a peak brightness of 1200 nits that support Dolby Vision, HDR 10, and HLG.

A14 Bionic Processor

All new iPhones are powered by the company’s new A14 Bionic processor, which is the first smartphone chip built on a 5nm process, leading to improved performance and efficiency. Apple claims the 6-core CPU and 4-core GPU in the A14 is up to 50 percent faster than the Snapdragon Flagship processor and has the GPU is the best in any mobile phone. The A14 chip includes a 16-core Neural Engine that offers an 80 percent increase in performance for machine learning tasks.

New Cameras

The iPhone 12 has a dual-cameras at the back with an f/2.4 Ultra-Wide camera and a Wide camera that has a new f/1.6 aperture (the fastest aperture in any iPhone yet) that lets in 27 percent more light for better performance in low-light conditions along with 2x optical zoom and 5x digital zoom.

The A14 chip powers new computational photography features with better Deep Fusion for improved photos with more texture and less noise, and improved Night mode with better contrast in images that works on all lenses including the front camera (finally). Smart HDR 3 adjusts the white balance, contrast, texture, and saturation in photos for more natural-looking images

5G

All of the iPhone 12 models in this year supports 5G for faster downloads and uploads, better quality video streaming, improved gaming, and HD FaceTime calls. However, only iPhone 12s sold in the US support mmWave 5G, which is the fastest 5G technology available while the iPhones sold in other countries are limited to the slower but more widely available Sub-6 5G connectivity. The phone supports Gigabit LTE is supported when 5G isn’t available, and to preserve battery life, a Smart Data Mode switches between LTE and 5G when necessary.

Other Features:

Connectivity

The iPhone 12 supports WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 and has the previously announced U1 Chip for spatial awareness and interactivity with other devices that include the U1 feature such as the HomePod mini.

Magsafe

Apple has improved wireless charging on the iPhone 12 with MagSafe: built-in magnets to guarantee that the iPhone properly lines up with the charger and supported MagSafe accessories. You can read more in detail here.

Face ID & Battery Life

There wasn’t any emphasis to battery life and Face ID during the keynote but we should be seeing minor improvements to FaceID and better battery life with the A14 processor inside and use of OLED.

Pricing & Availability

The iPhone 12 will be available for pre-order this Friday (October 16) and will be available on Friday, October 23. The phone starts at $799 (AED 2,999) with storage capacity of 64GB, 128GB and 256GB.

As our previous leaks said, Apple is, unfortunately, removing the charging brick and earpods from its iPhone 12 boxes to push forward the company’s environmental goals by reducing E-Waste, so you’ll have to shell out a little bit extra to buy the fast charging brick and earpods if you don’t own them already. The box is much smaller in dimensions and all iPhones come with a USB-C to lightning cable in the box.

We are excited to see these iPhones launch real soon and have a hands-on session with the device before giving our impression but so far it’s quite possible to be the top-selling phone once again.upgrade. Although tempting, if you have the previous iPhone 11 or XR, you really don’t need to upgrade unless 5G connectivity and OLED Display matters to you.
