A few hours after twitter-based leaker Jon Prosser suggested that the 13″ MacBook Pro will be updated, here we are. Apple has officially updated it on their wesbite. This new iteration isn’t the 14″ we hoped for, but still has changed that we wished for.
All models are now quad core – but the two cheaper models receive 8th Gen Intel i5 and i7 CPUs, while the two top end models receive new 10th Gen Intel i5 and i7 processors. While the CPU performance gains going from 8th ot 10th gen are negligible, the integrated Iris Plus graphics get a huge 80% boost. This will bring a noticeable difference in GPU-accelerated programs like Final Cut. You can also get more and faster RAM on the 10th Gen Intel models, upto 32GB of LPDDR4X RAM at 3733Mhz (compared to upto 16GB of 2133Mhz LPDDR3 on 8th Gen Intel models).
The “new” sciccor switch Magic Keyboard is something people loved in the 16″ MacBook Pro, and it has made it’s way into the 13″ as well. All models get the new keyboard which has much more travel and tactileness. The laptop is slightly thicker to incorporate the better keyboard, but it’s a compromise likely no one will even notice.
Apple has done a decent job with this refresh. While I would’ve liked to see a 6-core model for the 13″, the 10th Gen quad cores with much better graphical performance is welcome. The keyboard is a welcome change as well. While Apple does try to portray this as a gaming laptop which can play “graphics-intensive games like Dota 2″, without a dedicated GPU that’s only something the 16” can claim.
